Het werk van Geert Goiris, morgen in Gent. Inclusief de prachtige installatie met twee loebassen van 6×7 projectoren voor zijn serie Whiteout. Alleen al daarvoor is het de moeite. En met mij, cultuurcriticus Wouter Hillaert en kunstfilosoof Volkmar Mühleis. Spannend! Zenuchawtig!

Wat hebben we gisteren geleerd?

1. dieter zag de expo en hoorde dat het goed was

5. de gratis posters zijn topnotch quality. Super layout op de achterzijde ook. De verzamelwoede sloeg toe. Blije gezichten waren legio.

9. de continue slideshow van een 100-tal beelden was een goede beslissing (al was het niet eenvoudig om aan de praat te krijgen 🙂

3. michiel hendryckx die zijn weloverwogen belofte niet hield, was een grote ontgoocheling – ook voor heel wat aanwezigen.

1. mijn lens is niet sterker dan de stoof

7. dieter is héél tevreden met zijn groot beeld dat omhoog hangt. Na 3 juli zal het lang niet meer te zien zijn, dus komt dat zien, komt dat zien! Nog tot 3 juli in 44 Gallery.

EXPO_ Ten Oosten van 4°24′ @ MuHKA

Niet slecht, zeker niet slecht. Mooie verzameling van bekende hedendaagse kunstenaars, zowel westerse als oosterse. Ik vond deze groepstentoonstelling chaotisch. Inhoudelijk vond ik de bochten die kunstenaars maken om hun werk toch maar te kunnen koppelen aan het onderwerp van de expositie soms tenenkrullen. Toch enkele pareltjes gezien. Ook de aanwezigheid van de oosterse kunstenaars maakt veel goed. Ook hier zeker niet altijd even interessante werken, maar toch “iets anders”. Het geeft je een andere blik – misschien niet doordat het voor ons ‘ongezien’ is dat het ook meer aanspreekt. Ook mooi dat bij elk werk een infofiche ligt en een kort interview met de kunstenaar te horen is. Alleen al de artiest horen vertellen over zijn eigen werk is boeiend. Toch ook een aantal heel banale werken (Guillaume Bijl o.a.).

Yelena Vorobyeva and Viktor Vorobyev, Bazaar 2007, Collection photo M HKA. Prachtig eenvoudig. Rommelmarkten in Rusland. Installatie met een combinatie van foto, object dat op de foto staat en quotes. Heel efficiente manier om een stuk wereld-veraf te tonen. Visueel en inhoudelijk eenvoudig en net daardoor heel sterk. Schitterend, van zo’n dingen kan ik genieten. Rondsnuisteren, gedachten oproepen, 2D en 3D, een installatie die zich nestelt in je hoofd en waarvan je denkt “ik had hier ook willen opkomen – waarom vaak zo ver gaan zoeken”.

Charif Benhelima, Semites, Berlin, 2005 Courtesy Galerie Michael Janssen Berlin. Super. Het begint met de onbereikbaarheid van het werk. Het gaat verder met de visuele aantrekkelijkheid. Onmiddellijk vallen de witte vlekken op de portretten op. Na een tijdje gefascineerd kijken (als je de fotograaf kent, dan herken je hem, en besef je dat er iets autobiografisch inzit) merk je plots een diepgang op. En inderdaad, de foto’s zijn in 2 verschillende vlakken gepositioneerd, met een heel duidelijke bedoeling. Ik weet niet of ik dit in huis zou willen, en of het daar nog zou werken, maar in een museale context is dit voor mij de perfect installatie. Hier word ik jaloers van.

Luc Tuymans, Wallpaper, 2001, Collectie S.M.A.K. Stedelijk Museum Voor Actuele Kunst Gent. (en nog wat andere werken). Liet me eerlijk gezegd wat koud.

Koen van den Broek, Blue East, 2011 Courtesy the artist photo M HKA. Jaja, het werk staat er niet op, hangt net naast deze foto, wat je hier ziet is de koptelefoons tegen de muur met de interviews en de leaflet met een reproductie van het werk op. Niet slecht, maar ‘k was er ook niet ondersteboven van. Bij het lezen van de uitleg haakte ik nogal vlug af. En het beeld zelf deed me in eerste instantie aan beetje aan Raoul De Keyser denken, maar raakte me niet.

Dat rotsblok rechts, dat was mijn eerste live Anish Kapoor. Ik was er al door gefascineerd in boekvorm, maar in het echt is het wel “waw”. Of hoe een gat in een blok en een beetje pigment toch bizarre gevoelens doen ontstaan. Ik had er ook zo graag eens aangekomen! Op de achtergrond de Guillaume Bijl die enkele cheape chinese good tegen een muur zet. Ofwel ontgaat er mij het een en het andere, ofwel is dit een tweedehands derderangs readymade. Lijkt mij dat hij er zich nogal vlug vlug vanaf heeft gemaakt.

Ook boeiend: een video met allemaal aziatische mensen die “ik sterf” zeggen. Van jong tot oud. Boeiend om te zien hoe mensen deze woorden uitspreken. Zeker als er toch een verschil merkbaar wordt tussen jong en oud. Simple yet effective.

Nog gezien: women having sex with sheep (zo ongeveer toch), mannen met bloed tussen hun benen, etc.

Kortom: als je in de buurt bent zou ik toch even voor een anderhalfuurtje binnenspringen. Vooral de combinatie met de interviews maakt deze expo voor mij de moeite waard omdat ze zo de bezoeker toch een beetje kennis bijbrengt over de wat en waarom van een  kunstwerk en zo de discussie op een hoger niveau kan brengen dan “ik zie het graag” of  “wa ne zever is da, da kannekik ook”.

En we kregen korting omdat de andere expo nog niet geopend was.

content [a trip into the details in life. Diary snapshots. A genre often tried, seldomly succeeded, and which leaves me cold. But this book is different. This book is gorgious and made me dream away. Some images are incredibly beautiful, like the body completey covered with needled insects. All images reflect a simplicity and light unseen accompagnies by an underlying subtle dark atmosphere]

EXPO_ see moon a rising (titus simoens)

Solo exhibition of a young talented Belgian documentary photographer Titus Simoens, with an overview of his work. (lovely title of the exhibition, see moon simoen)

The location is a bit old-fashioned, but the images are worth the trip. Especially the 4 images documenting “Rodeo” in the states hit me. Also the two grand canyon viewpoints are unforgettable. Not to mention the photographs he made whilst being on a trip with two friends for 3 months in search for cowboys.

This exhibition ends in three days (12 june ’11). Museum van Deinze en Leiestreek, L. Matthyslaan 3-5, Deinze. Free entrance sunday mornings.

While you are there, don’t forget to have a look at the truely wonderful painting of Gustave Van de Woestyne (“De moedwillige blinde en de kreupele die een kindje willen leren lopen” – a truely unforgettable dark masterpiece) and a nice series of near abstract paintings of Raoul De Keyser.

content [Embedded journalism avant la lettre. Very cinematographic, black and white, 100 pages. Images made in the 1950’s where a team of the police is in search of a murderer.  We see images of this research and at the same time we get a view on Tokyo.  One negative point: sometimes the book suffers from not enough ‘kill your darlings’ – but it doesn’t spoil the fun. Traditional yet lovely storytelling, like watching an old movie!]

 In this group exhibtion, I will be showing one  ompletely new image. Not seen before: not in a magazine, not in a book, not even online!  (and i have seen the print, a lambdaprint, looks very good – Dimensions: 87x90cm. Diasec. Mmmmm!

Tuesday I attended a conversation with three Belgian Magnum photographers Carl De Keyzer, John Vink and Harry Gruyaert.

Carl always has an interesting vision on photography and he has a good sense of humour. As does John. Happy to have been there, and good to get to catch a glimpse of three different characters, but if you weren’t there, you didn’t miss anything either.

After the conversation there was time for a tour through the exhibition. Now that was really worth it. A nice sober lay-out. Much attention to detail. Kaat De Jonghe and Bart Marius (a.o.) did a really good job.

What is there to see? Plenty of mostly traditional b&w photography. All made by Belgian photographers!

My favourites: Gert Jochems (even though I prefer him in solo exhibitions where he is great in setting the atmosphere), Viviane Joakim (how ‘simple’ yet very effective to me) and Tim Dirven (known, as usual).  I also liked Jimmy’s portrait of his father. And of course Stephan’s known wonderful ‘Etienne’ (again very simple but oh so to the point).

There is even a footbal game showing. (oh, and you see it is not difficult to make a Sugimoto :))

An exhibition you have to see, at least because of the fact that it is very high level photography (mainly reportage) and that you get an overview of the Belgian quality!  What is the exhibition lacking? New work. There were no surprises. Only Viviane Joakim was new to me. All other images I had already seen somewhere else. But that is partly compensated by the lovely location.

EXPO_ Jeff Wall @ Bozar

Sometimes I get the remark “why in B&W – it does not reflect the exhibition”. Exactly! When showing you images of exhibitions, i try to tease you: showing you some things, but leaving enough open so that those who still have to visit the exhibition will still be surprised. I hate it when images show everything and then in the real world you say “aha, seen that online”. That’s my way of making publicity for something and at the same time be respectful for the organisers of the exhibition.

Now back to the Jeff Wall expo at Bozar, Brussels. I was there at the opening (vernissage). At first I was a bit dissapointed. The positioning of the works did not really give enough air to the majestic images and their presentation. But two hours later, when most of the visitors were gone, empty rooms were my luck.

I had to change my mind. Waw! I really enjoyed it. It was the first time in my life that I got to see a Jeff Wall in real. The lightbox presentation is stunning. The images shown are all very known, but what a difference with the reproductions in books.  Only the last room, with the inkjet prints and the falling boy did not convince me. 

Oh, and there are also some lovely Stephen Shores, and some wonderful Diane Arbus, and a Struth, …

Plenty of things to see! A must see! Even if you are not crazy about Jeff Wall, you have to take this opportunity to visit this exhibtion. You just have to.

Oh, and don’t forget to watch the horizontal and vertical cuts in his images.

But i rest my case: the Bozar is not the best place to exhibit his work.
